Kauai Shores Renovations and Lava Lava Beach Club
Kauai Shores, an Aqua hotel, opened in January after an extensive renovation project including a newly built lobby and restaurant, Lava Lava Beach Club. The oceanfront location is in Kapaa, along Kauai’s Royal Coconut Coast.
Renovations include updates to guest rooms, corridors, common areas and to the building and grounds. Designers restored the original blue entry tile and formed a courtyard around a centerpiece pool. New pool lounge furniture with accent pillows and brightly colored umbrellas surround fire pits and create a welcoming environment where guests can mingle, or relax and enjoy the view of Wailua Bay.
A series of buildings surround a grassy courtyard with towering palm trees in the center. An umbrella-covered patio contains tables and chairs clustered around the pool. Dan and I stayed in the Mauka Buliding, which is furthest from the restaurant and offers a peekaboo view of the ocean that’s just 100 yards away.
Decor in our room is a Technicolor flashback to the 50s and looks like something George Jetson may have dreamed up about the 21st Century. Navy and lime green Berber carpet meet navy tile along a wall-length patio. A bright green and blue throw is draped across a comfortable king-size bed, and a lime green bolster runs the length of six fluffy pillows. The blond entertainment desk has a lime green swivel chair and a 55-inch flat-screen installed above it. A full-length mirror set in a wavy frame hangs on a wall in front of a small bathroom. One downside is that showers get hot and cold when someone in another room is using the bathroom. I recommend planing showers around peek bathroom hours.
Overnight guests of Kauai Shores can enjoy two complimentary, specially blended tropical Maui Tai cocktails per reservation, with the option to order them for delivery while lounging around the hotel’s central pool. Guests who book three nights or more will also enjoy a $40 dining credit at Lava Lava Beach Club, valid for stays through December 20, 2016.
To find Kauai Shores, turn off Kuhio Hwy. (near the Coconut Marketplace) onto Papaloa Rd. A one-lane road makes parking tricky so use free valet services to park your car if you’re staying overnight. Valet parking is preferred if your just eating at the restaurant.
Next Friday, I’ll write about our experience at Lava Lava Beach Club, the only “toes in the sand” dining experience on Kauai.
