On Tuesday Nov.12, Tasting Kauai, Pono Photo, Grow Culture and The Feral Pig will host a book release dinner party. Author Marta Lane celebrates the release of her restaurant guidebook, Tasting Kauai: Restaurants — From Food Trucks to Fine Dining, A Guide to Eating Well on the Garden Island, by giving an autographed copy to every guest in attendance.
Collin Darrell, founder of Grow Culture, is designing the event. Collin is well known for producing sophisticated dinners that popup in spectacular settings. His menus are innovative, hyper-local and leaden with ripe, vibrant produce.
The Feral Pig is hosting the event. Dave Power, co owner and one of Hawaii’s most notable bartenders, is pairing each course with a handcrafted cocktail, wine or local beer. Chef Barb Ka’auwai’s five-course meal combines rustic flavors with refined elegance.
"Reflections of Solitude" by Daniel Lane will be given away to one lucky guest.

Daniel Lane, owner of Pono Photo and a freelance photographer who contributes the photographs to “Tastes of Kauai”, “Farmers Markets” and the “Eye on Kauai” photo spread in Kauai Midweek, provided the photography, graphic design and layout for the book. At the event, one lucky guest will win a 15×30 metal print of “Reflection of Solitude”. Daniel will also have additional metal prints available for sale.
At 6:30 p.m., a Champaign cocktail and amuse-bouche will be served as guests mingle before dinner. During the meal, Collin will tell the story of how everything came together and local farmers will speak about their farm as each course is presented.

Collin, Barb and Marta discussed the menu after a visit to the Kapaa farmers market last Wednesday. Ingredients will be sourced from One Song Farm, Govinda Farm and Kaneshiro Farm. The rest will be collected at north shore farmers markets right before the event. Considering what’s fresh and abundant, the menu design will be completed.
The full-color book, which was published last May, showcases restaurants that make fresh food from scratch, using local ingredients whenever possible. Whimsical icons indicate price ranges, dress code, alternative diets and more.
“This book is an exclusive listing of my favorite restaurants based on firsthand research,” says Lane, who has been the food columnist for Kauai Midweek for more than three years. “I’ve been in the kitchens of passionate cooks and interviewed top island chefs. I wrote this guidebook so people have quick access to delicious, nourishing meals in all price ranges.
