Tasting Kauai is happy to partner with the O’Connells for Winesday with The Wine Shop. Owners Dan and Ellen O’Connell are a delightful couple whose passion for wine is infectious, their knowledge is vast, and the service is friendly. Their beautiful store carries everything from wine and spirits to gourmet foods and sweet treats. Check in with Tasting Kauai every Wednesday to learn about their favorites. ¡Salud!
David Bruce Winery is one of the first wineries to discover the Santa Cruz Mountains as a viable winegrowing region. With its upper elevations at 2,200 feet and southwestern exposure to cool Pacific breezes, the land makes it ideal for growing Pinot Noir.
winesday-david-bruceFounded in 1964, David Bruce started out producing a Burgundian style of Pinot Noir. He has since expanded his reach into the Southern Monterey and Paso Robles area, producing over 60,000 cases a year of not only Pinot Noir, but Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Zinfandel and Petit Sirah.
This week, we are enjoying the latest release of their 2010 California Central Coast Petit Sirah. The Petite Sirah is not related to the Syrah, the varietal that is originally known for growing well in France. The Petit Sirah is widely planted and harvested in California and Australia because of their warm, dry climates.
We think that you will enjoy the deep dark cherry flavors, rich body and soft tannins that characterize this particular Petit Sirah. We love to grill so we think this wine pairs amazingly well with crispy barbecue chicken thighs, tangy sauce and homemade potato salad. A big, juicy rib eye steak with a baked potato and grilled veggies would be another great option.
You can try this delicious wine at our upcoming wine tasting on Saturday, September 7th from 4 to 7 p.m. The other wines that we will be tasting are Opolo Sangiovese, Finca Constancia Tempranillo, and Uvaggio Vermentino. At the event, which is complimentary and open to the public, we will   pair these wines with an assortment of pupu featuring specialty products that are available in the store.
See you soon at The Wine Shop!
Aloha,
Dano and Ellen O’Connell
