Restaurant Closures and Openings

This week, I have a lot of good news and some bad news. Last Tuesday, there was a fire near Chicken in a Barrel in Kapaa. The Star Advertiser reports, “Damage to the structure and its contents, including the restaurant’s refrigeration unit and ice machine, was estimated at $30,000. A neighboring building also sustained some heat damage.” Also, I recently learned that Da Imu Hut, one of the westside restaurants in our Kauai restaurant guidebook, closed due to a death in the family. Our hearts go out to them, and I’m told new owners plan to reopen the restaurant in Eleele, where Toi’s Thai Cuisine used to be. Grove Cafe at Waimea Plantation Cottages is closing also. I’m told it’s going to reopen some time this fall as Kalapaki Joe’s.

Governor Neil Abercrombie's Announcement on Bill 2491 Called Weak

Governor’s Announcement Raises Concern and Suspicion by Kauai Residents. “Voluntary Disclosure” of Pesticide Use Called “Weak,” and “Not A Substitute” for Strong County Mandates of Bill 2491.
Kauai residents reacted strongly to Governor Neil Abercrombie’s announcement on September 23, which requests agricultural entities to voluntarily disclose their “aggregated usage” of Restricted Use Pesticides until such time as rules and legislation are developed in the future. The Governor also stated that he would generally work with the State Legislature to seek funding for state agencies to address pesticide use compliance, without any further specific commitment.

If you’ve been fans of Tasting Kauai for a while, you know we hold the Kauai Grill in high esteem. We’ve had the privilege of interviewing chef de cuisine Maxime Michaud and executive chef Leanne Kamekona, as well as tasting dishes from world-renowned chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten. It’s simply delightful to be pampered with excellent service in a posh setting, while overlooking Hanalei Bay during sunset. Here is the new Fall 2013 menu, which includes 15 new dishes. If you would like to learn more about Maxime, Leanne, the food or  Kauai Grill, read my articles, “A Taste of Summer at the Kauai Grill“, “Robust Dishes at Kauai Grill” and “A Sense of Place on the Plate“.

Kapaa Voted One of America’s Prettiest Towns

Forbes Magazine named Kapaa on Kauai’s Royal Coconut Coast as one of America’s prettiest towns. Contributing writer, John Gufflow said, “What we went looking for (were) towns seemingly custom-designed for soaking in the sights, with charming main streets, a variety of activities and beautiful vistas. Whether it’s the fresh air, authenticity or lack of skyscrapers, these enchanting locales deserve a spot on your travel to-do list.” Gufflow explained that Forbes relied on seasoned writers from a variety of national travel publications to come up with the top 15 towns. “To designate America’s most picturesque towns, we called on travel experts from Frommer’s, National Geographic, Fodor’s, and Midwest Living magazines, all of whom shared with us selections of what they consider to be among America’s prettiest towns.”

David Bruce Winery is one of the first wineries to discover the Santa Cruz Mountains as a viable winegrowing region. With its upper elevations at 2,200 feet and southwestern exposure to cool Pacific breezes, the land makes it ideal for growing Pinot Noir.
