Tasting Kauai

Today, learn about the new owners of Living Foods Gourmet Market and what they have planned for their Poipu grocery store and cafe in “A food lover’s paradise” in The Garden Island.
In this week’s On the Farm column, if you’ve ever had noni, you’ll likely never forget the taste. You may want to make the pungent fruit a regular part of your diet. In this Sunday’s article, you’ll learn about the benefits of noni, including that it’s 75 percent as effective at killing pain as morphine, and not at all addictive.
Here’s a little insight from organic noni farmer Steve Frailey into why it’s better to drink unfermented noni juice and how to make your own.
In last week’s On the Farm column, “Bee Happy,” we explored beekeeping courses at Kauai Community College, discovered why bees swarm and learned what to do if you get stung.

Tasting Kauai

Happy Aloha Friday! We had an exceptional week and hope you did too. We got back from Colorado late in the afternoon on Monday and hit the ground running Tuesday morning. We interviewed a cacao farmer at 10 a.m. and you can look for their story in our On The Farm column in this Sunday’s paper. Our Tastes of Kauai column, which runs in today’s TGIFriday edition, will share a unique look into a longtime favorite, Kilauea Bakery & Pau Hana Pizza.

Tasting Kauai

My husband Dan and I wish you a warm, abundant, healthy and joyful holiday season! We have our last food tour today and then we’re taking time off to celebrate the close of 2013 and prepare for 2014. Since it’s just the two of us at Tasting Kauai, this will be our last blog post for 2013. My goal is to unplug from the computer the entire time. Other than submitting articles to Kauai Midweek (which are ready to go) there will be no blog posts, Facebook posts or any other social media.

Here’s a note I received from Chris Jaeb, owner of Common Ground Kauai where The Garden Cafe is located. The farm-to-table restaurant is a favorite of ours, and we gave it a pink hibiscus in our restaurant guidebook.

“I am taking this opportunity to thank all the people that have supported Common Ground and its vision for inner and outer sustainability. The number of people that have connected with this vision locally and globally over the past few years has been astounding. It has provided an enormous amount of inspiration to all the people that work at Common Ground.

If you’ve been fans of Tasting Kauai for a while, you know we hold the Kauai Grill in high esteem. We’ve had the privilege of interviewing chef de cuisine Maxime Michaud and executive chef Leanne Kamekona, as well as tasting dishes from world-renowned chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten. It’s simply delightful to be pampered with excellent service in a posh setting, while overlooking Hanalei Bay during sunset. Here is the new Fall 2013 menu, which includes 15 new dishes. If you would like to learn more about Maxime, Leanne, the food or  Kauai Grill, read my articles, “A Taste of Summer at the Kauai Grill“, “Robust Dishes at Kauai Grill” and “A Sense of Place on the Plate“.

Monkeypod Jam

We’ve been fans of Monkeypod Jam since June 2011, when we did an article about them for Midweek Kauai. It seems we’re not alone. In the March/April edition of Hawaii Magazine, a Reader’s Choice issue celebrating Hawaii’s Best of the Best, Monkeypod Jam is listed as having an obvious flair for sublime creativity. We couldn’t agree more!

Scotty’s Beachside BBQ

On Oct. 26, we reported that Scotty’s had been sold and today, we are sad to report it’s closed. Though Scotty’s Beachside BBQ is no longer serving up daily feasts at his beautiful restaurant, Scotty is still cooking amazing BBQ under Scotty’s BBQ & Catering Co. Scotty’s BBQ Catering specializes in wedding receptions, rehearsal dinners, and birthday and anniversary parties. Scotty’s Catering features plated or buffet style dinners with an affordable menu plus some “local style” favorites. All while you and your party gaze upon the vast blue Pacific Ocean from every table in the house! Scotty’s Catering offers breakfast, lunch or dinner options.

The Beach House

Travel + Leisure recently announced the top 37 Most Romantic Restaurants in the United States. The Beach House Restaurant not only made the list, but was the only restaurant represented in the Hawaiian Islands. “This is a real honor for the staff, Kauai and the restaurant,” says General Manager Tim Obert.
Travel + Leisure says, “A great romantic restaurant should make you feel the way a great romantic partner does—appreciated, special, and like you’re the only person in the room.” We can’t argue with that!
